Bill Stevenson | Interview at his grand piano | Jazz, Blues, Stories - Extra song
Saturday Aug 12, 2023
Saturday Aug 12, 2023
Bill is a well known jazz & blues pianist with a fabulous touch and a rich history...
"... While still in his teens, he joined the band Earth Opera, originally based in Boston. Stevenson left the band in 1968, after the release of their first album. During Stevenson's time with Earth Opera, the band frequently opened for The Doors, being fellow recording artists on Elektra Records, as well as having Jac Holzman as producer.[1]
After leaving Earth Opera, Stevenson returned to Ottawa, where he continued to play locally for a number of years. One of his associations was as an early member of Heaven's Radio,[2] considered to be one of the best bands to come out of Ottawa in the 1970s.[3] As of the mid-1970s, Stevenson relocated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, from which his career has been based since. During his career, Stevenson has worked with many notable artists, including John Lee Hooker, Amos Garrett[4] and Tom Rush.
Stevenson is the 2008 winner of the East Coast Music Award for Jazz Album of The Year.[4] With Tom Easley and Geoff Arsenault, he is also a 2009 East Coast Music Award nominee for Blues Album of The Year.[5]...

UK songwriter, storyteller and all round great entertainer Chris Ricketts, recorded live at The Carleton, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Known around the world as a great sea shanty bard, he also has a great variety of other tunes and original songs.
We did a short interview before his show which you will hear excerpts of and, for this episode, I have added a number of songs to the 1 hour radio show so you are getting most of the show from the night.

The Kempt Shore Acoustic Festival has 20 years history presenting songwriters in an intimate outdoor festival setting. Located on Nova Scotia Bay of Fundy, it has become a fixture in the Atlantic festival season.
I sit down with Marc Peterson (festival organizer) and artists Terra Spencer and Ryan Cook for a chat about the festival, songs, travels and we play some tracks from artists who will be on the show.

Why This?
In 2022 I was asked by my friend Jim if I would want to take over hosting a one hour radio show that aired on a local community station. I said, "Yes... I have no clue what I'm doing but, sure, why not? I'm not playing as much right now and I love music and people and songwriting so I'm in!"
I changed the name to Songwriters From Here And Away which is the Facebook page I've had for a long while. I've hosted probably ~70 house concert type shows over the years and that is where this podcast/radio/video project sits right now.
Sometimes the show is just tracks from artists, with a bit of info on the artist thrown in, some are zoom interviews with the artist playing songs and now I am hosting the interview & chat session in a live setting with a small audience. This gives the artist someone to play for other than just me!
Hopefully you will like where it is going. Let me know what you think, which artists you might like to here or any other ideas you may have. I value the feedback.
Send me a note!
Thanks for listening and supporting original music and the arts in general. Your support matters and makes a difference.
