This week on Songwriters From Here And Away, we're joined by one of the mentors for the 3rd Annual Songwriters Retreat (August 20–23, 2026, Nova Scotia), acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Angela Saini.
Angela has built a reputation as one of Canada's most engaging contemporary folk-pop and country-pop songwriters, earning praise from media outlets including The Examiner, which called her "one of Toronto's best indie songwriters," while BBC Radio Leicester described her as "massively talented." Her music has received national CBC airplay and has connected with audiences through songs that balance optimism, resilience, and honest storytelling.
In addition to her recording and touring career, Angela is a dedicated songwriting educator and mentor. She teaches songwriting at the Toronto campus of Trebas Institute and has spent years helping emerging artists develop their craft, creative practice, performance skills, and understanding of the music industry. Through her Bright Side Academy coaching program, she provides one-on-one mentorship covering songwriting, lyric development, co-writing, performance coaching, project management, royalties, marketing, and career development.
What makes Angela particularly valuable as a songwriting mentor is her belief that there is no single "correct" way to write a song. She encourages writers to experiment with melody-first, lyric-first, and collaborative approaches while discovering their own authentic creative process.
This episode features a mix of live performances and studio recordings as Angela shares songs, stories, creative insights, and lessons learned from more than two decades in music. Whether you're a songwriter looking to sharpen your craft or simply a fan of thoughtful, uplifting music, this conversation offers inspiration, practical wisdom, and plenty of great songs.

This week on Songwriters From Here and Away, we welcome rising songwriter Sam Robbins for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about songwriting, touring, creativity, and his tunes.
Often described as an “old soul singer-songwriter,” Sam blends the warmth and storytelling tradition of artists like James Taylor and Jackson Browne with a modern folk sensibility all his own. A Berklee College of Music graduate and nationally touring performer, Sam has quickly become one of the most respected emerging voices in today’s folk community.
In this episode, Sam dives deep into the craft of songwriting — where ideas come from, how songs evolve, and what makes certain lyrics resonate long after the music ends. Along the way, he performs and we share tracks, tells stories from the road, and talks openly about the realities of building a career in independent music.
Sam’s accomplishments include:
- Winner of the prestigious 2021 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition
- “Most Wanted to Return” artist at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival
- Main stage performances at Kerrville, Falcon Ridge, Philadelphia Folk Festival and more
- Over 200 live performances per year across North America
- Shared stages with artists including Jason Mraz and David Wilcox
- Named one of Atwood Magazine’s “Artists to Watch” for 2025
- Increasing recognition as an outstanding fingerstyle guitarist and songwriter
His latest album, So Much I Still Don’t See, produced by Seth Glier, captures the reflective spirit of a young songwriter shaped by thousands of touring miles, deep conversations, and a growing understanding of the world around him.

Why This?
In 2022 I was asked by my friend Jim if I would want to take over hosting a one hour radio show that aired on a local community station. I said, "Yes... I have no clue what I'm doing but, sure, why not? I'm not playing as much right now and I love music and people and songwriting so I'm in!"
I changed the name to Songwriters From Here And Away which is the Facebook page I've had for a long while. I've hosted probably ~70 house concert type shows over the years and that is where this podcast/radio/video project sits right now.
Sometimes the show is just tracks from artists, with a bit of info on the artist thrown in, some are zoom interviews with the artist playing songs and now I am hosting the interview & chat session in a live setting with a small audience. This gives the artist someone to play for other than just me!
Hopefully you will like where it is going. Let me know what you think, which artists you might like to here or any other ideas you may have. I value the feedback.
Send me a note!
Thanks for listening and supporting original music and the arts in general. Your support matters and makes a difference.
